Retiring enc.com.au

TLDR: If you see something from enc.com.au after September 2026, it’s not me.

In 2002 I decided I needed a more catchy domain name. While the previous one, eye-net.com.au more directly connected with my-then consulting company Eye-Net Consulting, I thought about having a three letter com.au domain? Sure. And so enc.com.au was born.

The Wayback machine has the first capture in October 2002 with the site itself saying it was rebuilt in September 2002. In any case, we can sat in late 2002 I had the enc.com.au domain.

Times changed (so much) between 2002 and now. Dot-com booms bust, companies fold replaced with other companies and then they disappear too. Domains under the com.au domain need to be related to a person, company or business name and I don’t have any of those anymore. One constant in life is dealing with AUDA and com.au domains is a pain. Always has, always will be.

I’m not sure why in October again, but in October 2016 I started replacing everything enc.com.au with dropbear.xyz which is the site you’re reading now (assuming I haven’t changed it again). The .xyz domain NIC *so* much easier to deal with, cheaper and with exception of some sites that are stuck in the 90s with what is a gTLD thinking, problem free.

Gradually all the services and emails moved over to this domain. I’ve been watching what email comes in on the enc.com.au domain and its almost exclusively spam. Most other things like this website and jabber were alias and have been for years.

So, its time to say goodbye to enc.com.au! If you see something using that domain after September 2026, it’s not me. I wouldn’t say its been fun, but that’s a chapter of my life closed for now.

My GPG keys have been updated with the enc.com.au uid (not the whole key!) revoked. GPG is user-hostile, so I may have messed that up somehow.
